Different Ways of Playing the Scales Part II

by John Falstrom

Intro: Every major, minor, and modal scale type should be played and memorized in the following different note patterns. (The numbers indicate the notes in a scale type. Sharp or flat the note(s) according to the scale type you are playing. Example: The natural minor scale has a b3,b6, and b7 in it).

Ascend/Descend II
R,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,R

Scales in Seconds
Ascend R,2R2,323,434,545,656,767,878,989,8
Descend 878,767,656,545,434,323,2R2,R

Peddle/Point I
Ascend RR,2R,3R,4R,5R,6R,7R,8R
Descend 8R,7R,6R,5R,4R,3R,2R,R

Peddle/Point II

Descend 8RRR,7RRR,6RRR,5RRR,4RRR,3RRR,2RRR,R

Octave Peddle/Point
Ascend 8R,82,83,84,85,86,87,88
Descend 87,86,85,84,83,82,8R,R

"The Bird"
Ascend R23,R234,R2345,R23456,R234567,R2345678
Descend 876,8765,87654,876543,8765432,8765432R

"The Shredder"

"The Shredder" is a term I made up for playing a scale pattern 4x each e.g., Ascend/Descend II---R,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,(4x),R. "The Shredder" represents repetition. As a bassist, repetition is incredible for developing endurance, speed, accuracy, fantastic technique, and the ability to focus for very long periods of time. I would definitely incorporate "The Shredder" into every scale pattern that you know and that you can play---I believe this is a must.

Important: The 9th note in a scale pattern is simply the 2nd note played an octave higher in pitch.

Note: Changing-up the rhythms with your notes will make everything you play sound more musical.

Summary: The more scale patterns that you can play on your bass guitar, the more versatile you will become.

Tip: I would play every scale and mode I know in every scale pattern that I know about. I would even make up my own scale patterns.
